San Francisco’s First Elevated Bike Lane

San Francisco just took bike safety to new heights, literally. The city’s Municipal Transportation Agency just debuted it’s first ever raised bike path, in an attempt to provide a few blocks of protection in the heart of downtown. The lane stretches along Market Street, from Gough to 12th, and is just the first of many paths scheduled for construction during the next year. San Francisco has chosen path locations based off accident prone areas of the city, and will hopefully choose the path over weaving through the sidewalk, while cars will hopefully find it more difficult to veer off…

Woman Killed In St. Helena Bicycle Accident

A woman was struck and killed in St. Helena this past week, after her bicycle ran into the side of a box truck on Main Street. The woman was vacationing with her husband who she had just recently married.   She entered Main Street from a private driveway, turning left out of the driveway, striking the passenger side of a box truck at a right angle, hitting midway between the cab and back axle.   She and the bike fell under the wheels of the truck, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was right behind her when…

Mother Credits Police With Spending Time, and Money, to Help Injured Son

As a bicycle accident lawyer, I must report on so many horrible events, in the hope that we may learn from them and improve the safety of our community. This can make my blog more often than not very negative. Well, I am happy to report that out of one tragedy and disaster arises a little bit of inspiration. Orion Benson, a 10 year old who was struck while riding his bike to school, is expected to make a full recovery from his life-threatening-injuries, and his mother, Sandy Benson, is giving part of the credit to the heroic acts of…

Tips for Cyclists: How To Avoid Bicycle Accidents

If you’ve read my posts about bicycle accidents before, checked out my blog, or even browsed my website, you know that one of my greatest goals is to reduce injuries and fatalities due to bicycle collisions, through making persons and companies and public entities accountable when they needlessly endanger bicycle riders, and also through advising about safer bicycle riding. The statistics are shocking: 100 or more people per year die from bicycle collisions in California alone. This number is deplorable and should be drastically reduced. How can we as bicycle riders and bicycle lawyers work toward reducing bicycle deaths, and…

Bikes v. Pedestrians, the Debate, and Your Thoughts?

As my clients know, I’m not just a bicycle advocate, and not just a pedestrian advocate, I am a safety advocate. And when we’re navigating the busy (and sometimesdangerous) streets of San Francisco, safety is much more important than whether we are walking, pedaling, or driving. I’m of the opinion that everyone needs to do their part to avoid collisions, avoid personal injuries,  and generally keep one another safe and secure. In our community, we have rules for good reason, and we should all be following them.   Unsafe cyclists have been a recent target in the news, with many…
