What is Traumatic Brain Injury?
Traumatic Brain Injury, also known as TBI, describes an impairment of brain functioning. TBI can result from trauma or injury, infection or lack of oxygen. - focal neurological deficit(s) that may or may not be transient; but where the severity of the injury does not exceed the following:
- post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) not greater than 24 hours
- after 30 minutes, an initial Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of 13-15
- loss of consciousness of approximately 30 minutes or less.

Traumatic brain injury can result from a sudden hit to the head that causes injury to the skull. It can also occur after an accident or surgery, due to swelling and bleeding into the brain or bleeding around the brain.
